Night of Qadr
The respected Aisha was deeply devoted to the Qur’an and the Sunnah. She was very conscientious about fulfilling the rights of what God and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded and evaluating the things they indicated. For this reason, she often asked questions to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and sought his advice. The Night of Decree, which falls within the month of Ramadan, is a night that must be known for both what transpires within it and the promises it holds for believers, and its significance should be duly recognized and respected.
The respected Aisha came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking advice on how to best utilize such a night of greater value than a thousand months in terms of prayer. She asked, “O Messenger of God! (peace and blessings be upon him) If I knew when Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) is, how should I pray on that night?” In response, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised her to recite the following supplication: “O God! You are the Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness. Forgive me!”1
One of God’s greatest favors to His servants for their eternal salvation is forgiveness, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) often drew the attention of believers to this fact by emphasizing the importance of Ramadan’s associated virtues. A believer should strive throughout their life to attain divine forgiveness, which is why the supplication recommended by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to his wife, the respected Aisha, for making the most of Laylat al-Qadr, a night more valuable than a thousand months, underscores this.
