Like Father, Like Son: Connecting Adam to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Footnotes
- Acknowledging that in some Muslim circles, the word “Prophethood” has been used with the intention that a prophet does much more than simply foretelling or foreseeing the future, I will prefer the common usage in the article.
- Bukhari, “anbiya” no 43, “manaqib al-ansar” no 42; Muslim, “iman” no 259; Nasai, “salat” no 1; Ahmad b. Hanbal, III, 148, IV, 209-210.
- “Adam” is cited by name 8 times, and “the Children of Adam” is mentioned 7 times in the Qur’an.
- The other accounts are found in Q 2:30–39; 7:11–25; 17:61–65; 20:115–24; see also 15:28–43.

- Further exploring this spiritual relationship, in interpreting Q 69:17 “And the angels will be at its ends; and above them, eight will bear the Throne of your Lord on that Day.” According to Ibn Arabi (d. 1240), the famous Andalusian Muslim scholar, these are Adam, Abraham, and Prophet Muhammad, and the angels Gabriel, Michael, Rafael, Ridwan, and Malik.
- The name Eve is mentioned only in the secondary Islamic sources, not in the Qur’an.

- The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) is told to seek forgiveness for his followers in Q 3:159 and 24:62.
- Q 7:22: “Thus [Iblis] led them on by delusion; and when they tasted the tree, their private parts were revealed to them, and both began to cover themselves with leaves from the Garden. And their Lord called out to them: “Did I not prohibit you from that tree, and did I not say to you that Satan is a manifest enemy to you?”
- Q 7:24: “[God] said: “Go down, (all of you,) some of you being the enemies of others. There shall be for you on the earth a habitation and provision until an appointed time.”
- Possible reference to Bakkah in Psalm 84:6 in the Old Testament.
- The Qur’an narrates that the being that refused to prostrate before Adam was Iblis, but it was Satan when it approached Adam and Eve to deceive them in the Heavenly Garden.
