Prayer When Entering the House
عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِىَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِذَا وَلَجَ الرَّجُلُ بَيْتَهُ ، فَلْيَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلَجِ وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجِ ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا ، ثُمَّ لِيُسَلِّمْ عَلَى أَهْلِه
Abu Malik al-Asha’ri reported: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When a man enters his house, let him say: ‘O Allah, I asked you for the good of this entrance and exit, We have entered in the name of Allah, we have come out in the name of Allah, and we have put our trust in Allah, our Lord.’ May he greet his family after reciting this prayer.”1
Greeting the Household When Entering the House
O you who believe! Do not enter dwellings other than your own until you have ascertained the permission of their residents and have greeted them with peace. Your doing so is what is good and appropriate for you, so that you may be mindful (of good manners and proper courtesy).”[Note] Nur, 24/27 [/ note] “But when you enter the houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah(i.e.)say: As-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you), blessed and good.” 2
Our Prophet ﷺ also recommended that believers should enter their homes with prayer and then greet those inside.3 As narrated by Anas ibn al-Malik (may God be pleased with him), he stated the importance of this greeting as follows: “Oh my son, when you enter upon your family’s home, say salam; it will be a blessing for you and the members of your household.”
عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَتْ : مَا خَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ بَيْتِي قَطُّ إِلَّا رَفَعَ طَرْفَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ، فَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ ، أَوْ أَزِلَّ أَوْ أُزَلَّ ، أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ ، أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ
Umm Salamah (may God be pleased with her) narrates: “When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his house, he looked up at the sky and prayed: Allah! I seek refuge in you from being led astray, from slipping my foot, from slipping another’s foot, from being wronged, from breaking one’s law, from breaking one’s law, from being ignorant, from being ignorant to me.” 4
