Prayers and Recommendations from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to those with Heavy Debts

0 6,289

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took refuge in Allah from living in debt and expressed his desire in his prayers to live a healthy life without being in need of anyone. He advised those who had to borrow to rely on Allah and seek refuge in His help.

As a matter of fact, our Prophet ﷺ asked Abu Umama (may God be pleased with him) from the Ansar who had trouble due to debts, “Can I teach you a word? When you say it, Allah (may He be glorified and exalted) removes his grief and provides the opportunity to pay his debt.” He advised him to take refuge in Allah in the morning and evening with the following prayer:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَقَهْرِ

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sadness, grief, helplessness, laziness, being stingy, overwhelming debt, and the overpowering of men (Allāhumma innī a`ūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazani wal-`ajzi wal-kasali wal-bukhli wa ḍala`id-dain wa ghalabatir-rijāl).”

Abu Umama (may God be pleased with him) says that after taking refuge in Allah with these sentences taught by our Prophet, he got rid of his grief and had the opportunity to work and pay his debt in a short time.1
